October brings an important reminder: Let’s Talk Month is an annual campaign held in October that encourages open, honest, and ongoing conversations about youth development and sexual health between trusted adults and young people. Talking openly is important because it gives young people accurate information, helping them make informed decisions about their sexual health and relationships.

But let’s be real – talking about these topics doesn’t have to be serious and stuffy! In 2022, Amplify conducted a Community Needs Assessment in Tulsa, diving deep into the needs of our youth. What did we find? Young people want to have these important conversations, but many face barriers to talking openly with trusted adults. We also discovered that parents and trusted adults often feel unsure about starting these conversations and want more resources to feel better equipped.

There are many fun and practical ways for parents and trusted adults to integrate these conversations into everyday life. Here are a few ideas to try:

Use Books as a Starting Point

Using books as a conversation starter is a great way to connect with young people at any stage. Picture books can introduce body awareness and information about consent, while non-fiction books spark conversations about healthy relationships and sexual health. Reading together about these topics can create a comfortable environment, encouraging young people to open up about their thoughts and feelings.

Create Common Interests Using Media

Leverage the content young people are already consuming. Whether it’s a TV show, movie, TikTok, or song, these can be great springboards for open, honest discussion. Ask them what they thought about a specific scene or song lyrics. This not only opens the door to conversation but also helps with understanding their perspectives.

Encourage Conversation

Family dinners or car rides are a prime time for open conversation. Use this time to ask casual questions about their day, friendships, or any topics on their minds. These moments can help build trust and create a safe space for discussing important topics as they come up.

Keep It Casual

While you aim to be a reliable source of information, being approachable is key. Young people often prefer casual, open conversations about love, sex, and healthy relationships rather than formal lectures. Creating a relaxed atmosphere encourages them to share their thoughts and questions freely, making it easier for you to guide them through these important topics.

Consistency is Key

Make these discussions an ongoing part of your relationship. Don’t confine these conversations to October; instead, weave them into your everyday interactions. Building this routine will help the young people in your life feel comfortable coming to you throughout the year.

Let’s Talk Month is an excellent opportunity to strengthen bonds with young people through open communication. By embracing these conversations, you’re not just informing them about youth development and sexual health—you’re creating a foundation for communication and trust.
